Seanad Committee statement

The Select Committee on Members' Interests of Seanad Éireann met this afternoon in Leinster House.

The Committee has commenced investigations into separate complaints made against Senators Larry Butler, Ivor Callely, Ronan Mullen and Ann Ormonde.

To progress the investigations the Committee will now seek, from the Senators concerned, a detailed statement regarding the complaints made in each individual case.
The deadline for receipt of these statements is 10 am, 23rd August 2010.

The Committee will consider these statements at a meeting scheduled for 2pm on 23rd August 2010 and will then decide what further action to take.

Where appropriate, the Committee will also contact the Oireachtas authorities to obtain any relevant information and documentation.

The Committee will proceed with these investigations with due regard to the provisions of the Ethics in Public Office Acts 1995 and 2001.

Senator Dan Boyle will not take any part in this process following public remarks previously made by him regarding Senator Callely.

Arising from some media comment, the Committee is satisfied that no issue arises regarding Senator Denis O'Donovan's participation in the Committee's proceedings and that no conflict of interest exists.
