John O'Neill's family said he was an innocent man with no criminal record.
The 40-year-old father-of-two from Coolock was on holiday in Spain with his family when he was shot outside a bar in Benalmadena.
It is understood he had been involved in a row there earlier.
Another man was thrown out of the bar by staff following the row and it is understood he returned with a gun and opened fire -fatally wounding Mr O'Neill.
Mr O'Neill's partner was with him in the bar but was uninjured.
Police are continuing their search for the gunman and are said to be following a definite line of inquiry.
There is no indication that the killing is linked to recent gang-style attacks in the area.
