Farm accidents are on the rise, according to new figures, with 18 people losing their lives already this year. 11 people were killed during all of last year.

Now the Health and Safety Authority, the IFA and FBD Insurance have issued a joint appeal to farmers to carry out an online assessment to improve farm safety.

Martin O'Halloran of the Health and Safety Authority said the free online assessment would help farmers to make their places at work safer.

The IFA leader John Bryan said farmers should prioritise health and safety and take the time to produce a farm safety statement.

Peter Gohery, a farmer from Eyrecourt Co Galway, lost hisleft leg in a farm accident last year. He has called on farmers to pay attention to safety issues.

Mr Gohery also pleaded with them to make sure that they do not suffer the kind of injuries he endured.
