Fahan church saw two funerals today

The funerals of three of the victims of Sunday night's road crash in Co Donegal have taken place today.

The funeral mass of 66-year-old Hugh Friel took place at 10am in a church not far from his home in Urris.

Mr Friel was described by parish priest Fr Fintan Diggin as 'a lovely quiet pleasant gentleman', a great neighbour who was going to be sorely missed.

Fr Diggin said Mr Friel's life revolved around his farm and helping his neighbours and his only distraction was bingo.

He said that Mr Friel would never have wanted the circumstances surrounding his death to heap anymore pain, sadness, grief or guilt on anyone else affected by the crash on Sunday night.

In Fahan, friends and family of 21-year-old Mark McLaughlin gathered for his funeral mass this morning.

At the same church, the community came together again this afternoon for the funeral of 21-year-old Patrick 'PJ' McLaughlin.

Paul Doherty, 19, Ciaran Sweeney, 19, Eamonn McDaid, 22, Damien McLaughlin, 21 and James McEleney, 23, were also killed in the crash. The funeral masses for four of the victims will take place tomorrow before the final funeral on Friday.

The families of the eight victims visited the scene of the crash last night in the Inishowen peninsula.

They held a short service and laid flowers before the road between Clonmany and Buncrana reopened.

The eight men died when a Volkswagen Passat collided with a Toyota Corolla at 10.40pm on Sunday night.

Seven of the dead men were travelling in the Passat, while Mr Friel was travelling home from bingo in his Toyota.

The driver of the Passat, Shaun Kelly, was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital with serious injuries and remains in a stable condition.
