The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation Batt O'Keeffe has said reports of up to 4,000 job losses at Eircom, AIB and Bank of Ireland were very concerning.
However, Minister O'Keeffe said Eircom had already indicated that it was re-structuring, but said his department has not been aware of job cuts at the banks concerned.
He was speaking at the announcement of 425 jobs at Stream Global Services, in Swords, in Co Dublin.
Meanwhile, Eircom Chief Executive Paul Donovan has said the company is in talks with unions to increase efficiency.
He was responding to reports that the company is planning to reduce its workforce by up to 2,000.
Eircom announced last year that it intended to cut 1,200 jobs by March next year.
