Updated: 22:57, Thursday, 10 June 2010

The HSE says it will review all cases of women over the last five years who were told in error that they had miscarried, and were recommended drugs or surgery.

It is one of a number of measures being introduced after a series of misdiagnoses came to light this week.

The man in charge of the review has defended the five-year limit on cases.

Professor Michael Turner, Master of the Combe Hospital, told a briefing in Dublin that the review could look back further but that would not necessarily help them do things differently.

Professor Turner said the number of cases coming forward so far was relatively small given that around 80,000 babies are born here every year.

He said the review would determine the exact number of these cases.

He said scans do have limitations and are not perfect and that they are sensitive to the profound psychological impact of a misdiagnosed miscarriage.

The HSE issued a statement last night detailing its actions to help prevent the misdiagnosis of miscarriage in early pregnancy.

A letter is being issued to all obstetrics facilities advising that the decision to use drugs or surgery in women who have had a miscarriage diagnosed must be approved by a consultant obstetrician.

A guidance document is also being developed.

A number of women have come forward this week who were told following scans that their unborn babies had died, but went on to have healthy children.

The HSE said more than 150 people have called special helplines set up since the first misdiagnosis came to light on Tuesday.

Phonelines are in operation in each of the maternity facilities across the country.
