Child protection groups have called on the gardaí to follow up on people who have been identified as having viewed or shared images of child abuse online.

The figures were revealed in a report by Prime Time Investigates, broadcast last night.

The ISPCC said it wants to know if gardaí have access to this information and if they have taken any action as a result of it.

Children at Risk in Ireland say gardai must knock on the doors of those who were identified and that these people should be legally pursued if necessary.

Fine Gael says the issue must be made a priority by Government and that it must be tackled in the same way that the illegal sharing of music was dealt with.

Gardaí say they are using all avenues of investigation to tackle this type of cyber crime.

They say they are involved in a number of operations that are potentially targeting hundreds of abusers.

They say that the one member of the force who is trained in file sharing technologies is currently training other investigators.
