Currently, the payment provides long-term income support to a lone parent until their youngest child is 18, or 22 if in full-time education.

Under the proposed legislation, from 2011, new applicants for the payment will receive it until their youngest child reaches 13.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Minister Ó Cuív said the legislation was aimed at encouraging lone parents to return to the workplace, and that, for most parents, it would not take effect for a number of years.
