Liberal Democrat Scottish Secretary Danny Alexander is to take over as Britain's Chief Secretary to the Treasury following the resignation of David Laws.
Mr Laws was forced to stand down yesterday after admitting he had claimed expenses to pay rent to his partner.
He had earlier apologised and said he would pay back the money, which the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported had amounted to £40,000.
Responding to Mr Laws’ resignation letter, British Prime Minister David Cameron described him as an ‘honourable man’.
Mr Cameron and said he hoped that, in time, Mr Laws would be able to serve again.
