Man shot dead on Belfast's Shankill Road

watch

A 44-year-old man has been shot dead on the Shankill Road in Belfast.

Bobby Moffett was approached by at least two masked gunmen wearing high visibility jackets and shot a number of times at close range outside the West Kirk Presbyterian Church.

Locals say that he was shot in the head and shot again as he lay in the road.

Mr Moffett was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

He was a leading loyalist figure and there is speculation his killing was the result of a falling out between rival loyalist paramilitary factions.

The PSNI does not believe the murder was sectarian and says it is following a number of definite lines of inquiry.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
