Over 1,500 people held a protest in Athlone this afternoon over plans to shut down a Health Service Executive retirement hospital for the elderly.
Staff members and relatives of over 25 people who have been asked to leave the hospital also took part in the protest.
There was widespread traffic disruption in Athlone town centre as a result.
