Belmullet - Monaghan Mushrooms plans to close in summer

71 jobs are to be lost at a mushroom growing plant in Belmullet, Co Mayo.

Monaghan Mushrooms confirmed this evening that it is to close its plant in the town in the late summer.

It says all of the employees will be offered alternative jobs at other locations, including the company's headquarters in Tyholland, Co Monaghan.

Earlier, Údarás Na Gaeltachta, which has aided the project, sought a further meeting with the company.

Chief Executive Pádraig Ó hAoláin said the jobs are very important to the local economy.

Monaghan Mushrooms is one of the largest mushroom producers in Europe.

It employs a workforce of 1,500 and has plants in Ireland, the UK and Canada.
