Nine people have been killed so far this year in farm accidents.

Over the past five years, 105 people have been killed in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors.

The rate of reported fatalities is three times that of construction and six times greater than the European average.

Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary and Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith have asked farm groups and insurance interests for a plan of action to supplement the work being done by the Health and Safety Authority on farm safety.

Mr Calleary said there is an urgent need to change the whole culture in relation to farm safety and has asked the farm organisations to coordinate their efforts and come back to him with their plans in four weeks.
