Two men have been sentenced in London to lengthy prison terms for their part in the importation of 1.5 tonnes of cocaine at Dunlough Bay in Cork in 2007.

Michael Daly, 49, a former London Metropolitan Police drugs squad officer, received a 22 year sentence to run consecutively with an eight year sentence he is currently serving for another drugs smuggling offence.

Allen Wells, 57, got 14 years in prison for his part in the plot that failed when an inflatable boat carrying the bales of cocaine capsized in bad weather in Dunlough Bay.

Both men had pleaded guilty to the offences.

During today's sentencing hearing, prosecutors paid tribute to the work put into the case by gardaí, who were present in court to hear the sentences.
