US President Barack Obama has spoken of his commitment to immigration reform at the annual St Patrick's Day celebration in Washington.

Mr Obama said he was still committed to immigration reform, which would be fair to all.

More than 500 guests, including the Taoiseach, attended a reception at the White House yesterday.

The event was hosted by Mr Obama and his wife, Michelle.

In his remarks, Mr Obama referred on a number of occasions to his new-found Co Offaly roots.

In his address, Taoiseach Brian Cowen spoke about the bonds between Ireland and the US, which he said run deep in our shared history.

He also jokingly said there are many O'Neills and O'Haras and others in Co Offaly who are trying to trace their heritage to see if they are related to Mr Obama.
