Green Party leader John Gormley has supported calls by Senator Dan Boyle for Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly's report into the Lost At Sea scheme to be given full consideration by an Oireachtas Committee.
The Agriculture Committee, with a Government majority, has already voted down a Fine Gael attempt to have a full hearing on the report.
The Lost at Sea scheme was established in 2001. It allowed owners of fishing vehicles whose boats had been lost at sea to apply for 'replacement capacity'.
The Ombudsman said the failure of Oireachtas to deal with the substance of the report had created a 'critical moment' for her office and its relationship with the Government and the Oireachtas.
She has urged that the matter be considered again. Senator Boyle said he would support efforts to raise it at the Constitution Committee.
Today, Mr Gormley said he also favoured the report getting more detailed consideration by a Committee.
He said there had been no detailed discussion of the matter at Cabinet but he was confident a resolution could be found to the present difficulty.
