Police in Sydney in Australia have charged a 19-year-old man in connection with a serious assault on an Irishman.

Paddy Fox, 29, who lives in the Coogee area of the city, suffered serious head injuries.

Mr Fox was admitted to hospital and underwent emergency surgery after the incident in a hotel in the suburb of Randwick on Sunday night.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Fox is in a critical condition.

The 19-year-old man has been charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm and will appear in court next month.

Mr Fox is the third Irish man to be attacked in Sydney's eastern suburbs in less than three years.

Dubliner Gearoid Walsh, 23, died following an assault during a night out in Coogee in October last year.

David Keohane, 29, from Cork, was also assaulted in Coogee in August 2008.
