Controlled explosion on Shannon device

A block of apartments in Shannon town centre had to be evacuated following the discovery of a 'crude but effective' device this afternoon.

The device was discovered in an unoccupied unit at the Kincora Apartments during the course of a routine search by gardaí at around 12.30pm.

There are about 40 apartments at the block, ten of which are unoccupied.

Gardaí called in an Army bomb disposal team and a controlled explosion was carried out.

The device was described as 'crude but effective'.
