The initiative is aimed at reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour and crime in the University area.

The cameras, which began operating this morning, will be managed by Belfast City Council and monitored by the PSNI on a 24/7 basis.

The launch comes ahead of the St Patrick's Day celebrations next week.

The Holy Land area, which is largely populated by students, has been the scene of disturbances on previous St Patrick's Days.

Last year, police dressed in riot gear arrested 12 people after house parties began to spill out onto the streets.

PSNI officers were called to the area after a car was vandalised by revellers.
