Legislation to change the name of An Daingean to Dingle in the English language and Daingean Uí Chúis in the Irish language has been published.

Under the Placenames Order 2004 the name of the town became An Daingean.

A plebiscite of people in An Daingean in 2006 indicated a majority favoured the name Dingle/Daingean Uí Chuís.

In April 2008 the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, said he would bring in legislation to give effect to the plebiscite.

That legislation has now been published in the Local Government (Dublin Mayor and Regional Authority) Bill 2010. It is expected to become law before the end of the year.

Independent TD, Jackie Healy Rae, who supports the Government welcomed the news. 'I've been bringing the matter up every week at my meetings in the whip's office' he said.
