The Alliance represents unions and associations of emergency workers such as nurses, gardaí and fire officers.

The Public Services Committee of ICTU is meeting tomorrow to consider the next step in its campaign against the cuts.

'Unless the Government is willing to re-engage with the trade union movement in the next few weeks there is no way that the present situation can be allowed to continue,' Chairman of the Alliance Des Kavanagh said.

'It is already beginning to have a severe effect on the delivery of services to the public,' he added.

Mr Kavanagh said: 'The Government, having blown the opportunity to secure the help of public service workers in achieving major savings and reforms last December appears to be in denial over the inevitable consequences of that decision.'
