The Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy, has said gardaí are keeping an open mind about the motive for the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man at a petrol station just outside Limerick city early today.
Speaking in Cavan, Commissioner Murphy described the killing as a 'despicable' crime.
The victim, named locally as Daniel Tracey, was a brother of Owen Tracey, who escaped a gangland attack in January 2003.
His uncle Kieran Keane was shot dead in the atrack, which formed part of a feud between criminal gangs in the city.
A 29-year-old man, who was arrested this morning, is being questioned about today's attack, which happened at around 6am.
Gardaí initially responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Topaz station and found the dead man when they arrived.
It is not yet clear how many gunmen entered the building and gardaí are still checking with witnesses.
Supt John Gilligan said gardaí in Limerick are looking for a red Toyota Corolla, with the registration number 96 LK 1814, in connection with the shooting.
The car was seen in the vicinity of the Topaz filling station on the Ennis Road around the time of the shooting.
