Capel Street in Dublin city centre will remain closed for the weekend following a fire that destroyed a head shop and sex shop early this morning.

It will not reopen until Monday.

Three shops that housed the businesses will have to be demolished.

Adjoining premises were also assessed by the Fire Brigade.

Residents, who had to leave a nearby building, reported hearing an explosion when the fire broke out at around 6.30am.

A number of cars at the rear of the premises were damaged when a wall gave way due to the blaze.

There is no access from any of the approach streets and motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

Luas services are not affected.
