The Irish Cancer Society is expanding its information and support services by setting up five more centres across Ireland.

The National Cancer Registry of Ireland estimates that up to 30,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

The Irish Cancer Society's first cancer centre, known as a Daffodil Centre, was opened in Galway University Hospital last summer.

The society said the new Daffodil Centres will be set up this year in designated cancer care centres as well as regional and private hospitals.

The centres are an extension of the Irish Cancer Society's existing information service and are run by an experienced cancer nurse with support from trained volunteers.

They provide information, advice and support to those concerned about the disease and can also accompany people to appointments and treatment.

The announcement comes ahead of today's launch of the society's Daffodil Day campaign, which takes place on 26 March and aims to raise €4m.

The society hopes the €4m will be spent on the provision of free care services for cancer patients and their families.
