Former Workers' Party leader Tomás MacGiolla has been buried after a secular funeral service in Ballyfermot in Dublin.

Party colleagues remembered him as a 'visionary', a 'true patriot' and 'a giant of the Irish left'.

Mr MacGiolla's remains were brought to Palmerstown Cemetary, following a service at Ballyfermot Civic Centre where tributes were paid to him by family, friends and party colleagues.

The service was attended by his wife and extended family, party colleagues, friends and a large number of constituents.

The President and Taoiseach were represented by their Aides-de-Camp.

Also in attendance were Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore, Liz McManus TD, Ruari Quinn, Roisin Shorthall and Aengus O'Snodiagh along with the Lord Mayor of Dublin Emer Costello and SIPTU's Jack O'Connor.
