200 jobs are to go in Co Louth with the closure of the Bitech engineering plant in Dunleer.
Talks between management and the SIPTU union have been adjourned for today but are expected to continue next week.
The company has committed to a three-month consultation period.
SIPTU regional organiser John King said the union was aiming to save as many jobs as possible at the plant, which is part of the Glen Dimplex group.
Last year, the workers rejected a cost-cutting proposal which would have seen 20% pay cuts and large scale redundancies.
Mr King said most of the workers were already earning less than the average industrial wage.
The company produces electrical heating and cooking appliances.
