The trial opened in his absence in October.

The 64-year-old has been charged over his alleged role in the Bosnian war in which around 100,000 people died and 2.2m were forced to flee their homes.

Radovan Karadzic told the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia: 'I will file a further motion for postponing the start of the trial before which he is conducting his own defence on 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

'Time is going to be our greatest enemy,' Mr Karadzic said ahead of the scheduled resumption of his trial on 1 March.

The tribunal appointed a British lawyer, Richard Harvey, for Mr Karadzic last November after the accused boycotted the first three days of his trial that opened on 26 October last year.

The court ruled that Mr Harvey would take over if Mr Karadzic continued his boycott when his trial resumes.
