A 23-year-old man has appeared before a special sitting of the District Court in Longford charged with the assault of a 60-year-old man in the town on New Year's Eve.
Noel Keegan was attacked on Park Road at about 9pm on Thursday night and later died in hospital.
Martin McDonagh, with an address at Mostrim Oaks, Ballymahon Road, Edgeworthstown, was charged with assault and causing harm to Mr Keegan, a retired member of the defence forces and father of three
Mr McDonagh has been remanded in custody to appear in court again on 5 January.
