Eight million cigarettes seized in Dublin

Officers from Revenue's Custom service in Dublin this morning seized eight million cigarettes with a value of €3.1m.

The 'Palace' brand cigarettes arrived at Dublin Port from Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates, via Antwerp on 29 December in a consignment marked 'heaters'.

A truck and a container have been seized and several individuals have been interviewed.

Investigations are ongoing both nationally and internationally.

Meanwhile, The revenue commissioners have said that 20% of all cigarettes smoked here are smuggled into the country, costing the state hundreds of millions of Euro in lost Revenue.

As part of their campaign against the illegal cigarette trade, the Revenue Commissioners have started issuing new security seals to go on all tobacco products sold here.
