Man critical after Galway assault

A man is in a critical condition following an assault in the centre of Galway this morning.

A 27-year-old man is in a critical condition following an assault in the centre of Galway this morning.

It is understood the man was assaulted at approximately 3.25am at the junction of Upper Dominick Street, Henry Street and William Street West in Galway city.

The man suffered head and facial injuries and has been transferred to Beaumount Hospital in Dublin.

A 23-year-old man was arrested at 2.20pm this afternoon in connection with this incident.

A technical examination of the crime scene is underway and an incident room has been opened at Galway's Mill Street Garda station.

Gardaí are seeking witnesses and are appealing to anybody who was in the area to contact them at Galway Garda Station on 091 538000.
