Four prison officers required hospital treatment following the incident.

One was treated for a suspected broken arm, one for a head wound and others for minor lacerations.

Mountjoy Prison Director General said he praised the staff for the manner in which the situation was dealt with.

An investigation has been launched by the prison governor and gardaí.

The Prison Officers Association says it is seriously concerned following 'a series of incidents' over the past 24 hours.

The POA has highlighted 'continuous violence' in Irish prisons and says there appears to be 'a lack of policy or strategy to address this serious issue.'
