Garda technical experts have said they are waiting on confirmation from structural engineers to determine when it will be safe to begin their examination of the scene at St Mel's Cathedral in Longford.
It is not known whether or not the fire was started deliberately.
The scene has been preserved and gardaí say the course of the investigation will be determined by the results of the onsite forensic examination.
An estimated €2m worth of damage was caused to the building after the fire broke out early Christmas morning.
