The death toll from a nightclub blaze in the Russian city of Perm three weeks ago has climbed to 152.

A total of 74 people remain in hospitals, the Perm regional branch for the Emergency Situations Ministry said separately.

The Moscow-based investigative committee of the prosecutor's office said the injured were still in a ‘serious condition’.

Ignited by fireworks set off inside the nightclub, the 5 December fire in the city of Perm, located about 1,200km east of Moscow in the Ural Mountains, was the country's deadliest blaze in recent history.

As the result of the fire, 99 children lost one parent and nine children became orphans.

After the fire, the regional government resigned en masse as President Dmitry Medvedev, who called the blaze ‘beyond good and evil’, said he expected all those responsible in the tragedy punished.

The last official toll had stood at 149 people dead.
