Robbery at Longford post office

watch

Gardaí are searching for a silver Mercedes used as a getaway car in a post office raid in Co Longford this morning.

Two men - said to have Dublin accents - broke through the security screen at Edgeworthstown Post Office using a sledge hammer sometime after 9.30am this morning.

The men held staff to the ground and threatened them with a knife before making off with a sum of cash. However, a time lock safe at the post office on the Main Street was not opened.

The men, who were wearing balaclavas, drove out the Ballinalee Road from Edgeworthstown in the silver Mercedes.

Gardaí have taken statements from the two staff, one of whom received minor head injuries.

A full investigation is under way and anyone with information is asked to contact gardaí.
