President Mary McAleese said the response of the emergency services to the unprecedented floods throughout Co Cork last month was heroic.

President McAleese, who is on a two-day visit to the affected areas in Cork, the West and the midlands, said the emergency services had been utterly selfless in dealing with the flooding crisis.

President McAleese along with her husband, Martin, is visiting Cork city and Bandon today where she is meeting members of the emergency services as well as those affected by the floods.

She will travel to Galway and other parts of the west tomorrow.
