The funeral of the garda who died following a road crash in Co Donegal has taken place in Co Leitrim.

24-year-old Garda Gary McLoughlin from Fenagh near Ballinamore was in a patrol car with a colleague when a car collided with their vehicle.

The Garda Commissioner said the death of the young garda highlighted the dangers members of the force face on a daily basis.

Fr Bernard Hogan from Fenish parish said Gary had dedicated his life to a value system of justice and he had made the ultimate sacrifice for his state and country.

Fr Hogan said people were entitled to believe that when they went to work they would return safely.

Since hearing the news of Garda Mc Loughlin's death Father Hogan said the heart had been ripped out of the community.
