Two men have been charged with assault and burglary following an attack on an elderly couple in Co Longford.
The two appeared in Mullingar District Court this evening.
31-year-old Christian Wren of Ballyfermot Drive in Dublin and 24-year-old Anthony Flannery, of no fixed abode, were both charged with assaulting 74-year-old Mary Sperath and her 65-year-old husband Heinz at their home in Fisherstown in Clondra.
A third man, who is in his 30s, has been released and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Mr and Mrs Sperath are still recovering in Roscommon County Hospital after they were threatened with a firearm, a knife and a taser device during the raid.
It is understood detectives are pursuing claims that the couple were not the intended targets of the gang which carried out the robbery.
Detectives have described the attack as 'horrendous'.
The men threatened that they would cut off the couple's fingers and use the taser if they did not hand over money.
The pensioners were bleeding heavily and severely traumatised after the incident.
They are now said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
