Government Chief Whip Pat Carey has said he is confident he will be able to secure the votes of backbenchers and independents this week.

He was speaking after Galway TD Noel Grealish wrote to him seeking a special deal to ensure his support.

The former Progressive Democrat and now Independent TD is to have talks with Taoiseach Brian Cowen tomorrow.

It comes as uncertainty remains over whether or not he will support the Government in Wednesday's Budget vote.

Deputy Grealish wrote to Mr Cowan last week in what was seen as a bid to get a deal with the Government on series local projects - including assistance for flood victims - in his constituency.

The Government Chief Whip Pat Carey said earlier today he believed that an accommodation could be reached with the West Galway TD.

Deputy Grealish is travelling to Dublin tomorrow morning and will have a meeting with the Taoiseach at Government Buildings tomorrow evening.

Mr Carey said the former PD deputy had raised some matters of concern such as the problem of those affected by flooding in his constituency and some longer term issues.

But the Chief Whip insisted that these matters could be addressed in the lifetime of the Government.

Mr Carey also said there was no alternative to returning to the issue of public service reform despite the collapse of talks with the unions.

He said that during those talks it was agreed by everyone that industrial action would serve no purpose, and when what he called the 'white heat' went out of the current situation, all would have to return to the issue of reform.
