watch

A man charged with the murders of two young jockeys who died in a fire at a flat has been remanded in custody.

Peter Brown, 37, appeared at Scarborough Magistrates Court for a brief hearing accused of murdering promising apprentices Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, on 15 September this year.

Mr Kyne, from Co Galway and Ms Wilson, from Forfar, Scotland, died in the blaze at a flat complex in Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire.

The deaths of the two young riders shocked the racing world and a series of tributes were held at race courses and yards across Britain and Ireland.

Mr Brown, of School Croft, Brotherton, Knottingley, North Yorkshire, appeared in the glass-fronted dock flanked by three security officers for the three-minute hearing.

He spoke only to confirm his personal details.

There was no application for bail from his solicitor Richard North and reporting restrictions were not lifted.

Magistrates remanded Brown in custody to appear next at Leeds Crown Court on 4 December.
