A male from the south of the country with an underlying health condition has died from human swine flu.

It brings to 17 the number of deaths here.

New cases of the virus continue to fall, with over 15,000 people contracting the virus in the past week, according to the Department of Health.

Cases are still rising in children and young people.

Meanwhile, 221 people remain in hospital with the virus, 18 in intensive care.

The HSE has said it is concerned at a low uptake of the swine flu vaccination among children under 5 years.

It said around 25 percent of parents who had received letters of invitation have responded by bringing their child to a clinic.

So far, around 150,000 of the estimated 300,000 parents with children under 5 years have been issued with letters from the HSE.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, urged parents to ensure children are vaccinated as they are at risk.

Meanwhile, Dr Pat Doorley of the HSE said that vaccination in schools will begin on Monday and will take around two months.
