A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a shopkeeper during a robbery in Arklow, Co Wicklow.
At around 8pm last night, a man armed with a knife tried entered Broders on Coolgreany Road in the town.
John Deasy was attacked after he went to the aid of a woman who worked in the shop.
The woman screamed and the owner, who lived upstairs, came to investigate. He confronted the raider as he came out of the shop and was stabbed in the chest.
The scene where the 45-year-old father-of-two was killed remains sealed off this morning.
Gardaí are searching for the murder weapon.
Gardaí say Mr Deasy was probably stabbed with a knife but it will not be until post mortem examination results are received that they will be able to rule out another weapon.
House-to-house inquiries were carried out this morning and all bin collections in the town have been cancelled for the day.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the St Peter's Place area of Coolgreany Road to contact them at Arklow Garda Station.
They are also looking for a man around 6'4'' tall, who was wearing a dark jacket and who was seen in the area at the time.
