McAleese launches road safety campaign

The President has said everyone has an individual responsibility to make the roads safe in run up to Christmas.

Mary McAleese was speaking at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin at the launch of this year's Christmas road safety campaign.

Between 1997 and 2007 more than 1,500 people have been seriously injured in road traffic accidents in the period around Christmas and the New Year.

Gardaí say they will be out in force to prevent more people being killed and lives being destroyed over the holiday period.

This year, 213 people have died on Irish roads, which is 17% less than during the same period last year.

It is estimated that for every life lost, 44 people are injured; eight of them seriously.
