Govt urged to support food producers

watch

Ireland's leading chefs are calling on the Government to establish a support system to ensure the survival of the country's small food producers.

Euro-toques Ireland, the Irish branch of the European Community of Chefs and Cooks, wants a safety net to be put in place to defend artisan production and encourage rural enterprise.

The group claims regulatory requirements and compliance costs are making many businesses uncompetitive.

It says producers are being asked to invest in facilities, but they will never be able to recoup the cost.

The call was made a reception in Dublin for the 2009 Euro-toques Food Awards.
