14-year-old killed in Derry accident

A 14-year-old boy has been killed in an accident involving a quad bike in Co Derry.

The boy has been named as Paddy McErlean.

The crash happened on the Craigmore Road near Maghera around 10pm last night.

Another 16-year-old, who was also involved in the accident, is in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The PSNI have said the the quad bike was the only vehicle involved.

It emerged today that the boy's death was the third tragedy to hit the McErlean family in recent years. His father Joe died three years ago and his uncle earlier this year.

Sinn Féin Councillor for Maghera Sean Kerr said the collision happened on the edge of town on a narrow road in atrocious weather conditions.

'It is a terrible tragedy all round, the town is basically in shock,' he said.

'He is from a very well-known and well-respected local family.'
