A murder investigation is under way into the death of an elderly man whose body was found in his home in Co Galway yesterday.

Finbar Fahy, 78, was a retired farmer and lived alone at Tullira near the village of Ardrahan.

He was found dead in the living room of his home yesterday morning.

The results of a post mortem examination carried out at Galway University Hospital today showed that Mr Fahy died from blunt force trauma to the head.

A team of 60 gardaí are involved in the investigation into the murder of the 78-year-old, which they say is still in its early stages.

Investigators say, at this stage, they have found no evidence of a break-in at the farmhouse and they have not yet been able to establish whether anything was taken.

The scene remains sealed off. House-to-house inquiries are being carried out in the area.

An incident room has been set up in Gort Garda Station and anyone with information is asked to telephone 091 636432.
