Man in court on sexual assault charge

A former chairman of Cavan County Council has gone on trial at Tralee Circuit Criminal Court charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

Anthony Vesey, 52, from Kilconny in Belturbet, Co Cavan, has pleaded not guilty to a single charge of sexually assaulting the youth at a hotel in Killarney in September 2007.

Mr Vesey, who is also a member and former chairman of Belturbet town council, pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned this morning.

The trial is expected to last three days.
