Fine Gael overall majority possible - Kenny
Saturday, 7 November 2009 16:10Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said he does not think it is beyond the bounds of possibility that his party could win an overall majority in the next general election.
Speaking in a wide ranging interview with Marian Finucane on RTÉ Radio 1, Mr Kenny claimed Fine Gael is the only party that has put its plans 'out there' regarding what it will do if in government.
Mr Kenny reiterated calls for a general election, saying its value would be that the new government would have a fresh mandate from the people.
He said a new mandate is needed so that can take the country in a different direction.
Mr Kenny said his ambition is to lead that next Government, be the next Taoiseach and to implement his party's proposals.
He said he expects Fine Gael to' win big' in the next election. Asked if he thought he had the same kind of deep emotional connection with the people that Barack Obama does, Mr Kenny said he believes he does.
However, he said the country's problems are beyond the competence of any one individual, and that is why he is putting a team of people together.
Mr Kenny also said he would not support any cut in child benefit in the Budget. He said so many people rely on child benefit as a source of income and there are other ways to deal with people on higher incomes.
