Magdalen group meets Govt officials

A group of women who were resident in Magdalen laundries have met with senior officials at the Department of Justice.
The meeting is the first time former residents have met with Government officials to discuss their care and the issue of redress.
The group met with the Secretary General at the Department Sean Aylward and other senior officials for more than one hour this afternoon.
The group say they are happy that the Department now understands their position and assurances have been given that enquiries on their behalf will be made.
However. one of the group said she was surprised that officials did not have a full knowledge of some of the issues involved with the Magdalene survivors.
Maureen Sullivan said that it was a powerful meeting but she said she was hopeful officials would follow through on their promises to look into the issue involved.
The group wants compensation for the hurt and abuse they suffered when in care at the laundries.
The group said if they do not receive a satisfactory outcome from the meeting today they will begin legal action to force the state to compensate them.
A spokesperson of the Department of Justice said the meeting was 'constructive and helpful'.
