Grain farmers protest over prices

Grain farmers begun protesting today at the Glanbia feed mills in Portlaoise and Clonroche in Co Wexford over the price the company is paying them for barley.

The Irish Farmers' Association has accused Glanbia of paying the lowest price for feed grain in the country - about €8 to €10 a tonne less than farmers are getting elsewhere.

IFA Grain Committee Chairman Colum McDonnell said his members are losing up to €50 for every tonne of grain produced this harvest, and the Glanbia price is 'adding insult to injury'.

Mr McDonnell said Glanbia are offering only €85 a tonne while the market rate is at least €95 per tonne.
