The jury in the trial of two Co Laois brothers accused of murdering a neighbouring farmer has been discharged.

'DJ' Byrne, 38, and his 32-year-old brother Jason, both of Hammer Lane, Borness, Mountmellick, Co Laois, had denied the murder of Edward Dempsey.

The married father of two died in Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise ten months after an incident on Hammer Lane on 18 December 2006.

After legal argument today, the jury was told that issues had arisen and the trial could not proceed before them but would have to resume on a future date before another jury.

Mr Justice George Birmingham said it was 'extremely unfortunate but seemed to be unavoidable'.

The case was adjourned to fix a new date for hearing to 30 November.
